Supporting Speak Up Africa with Conference Interpreting in New York

On September 24, 2026, Cultures Connection provided English–French simultaneous interpreting and technical coordination for Speak Up Africa, supporting two separate events in New York during United Nations General Assembly week.

Held in two different rooms, the meetings addressed health financing and international cooperation. Each required its own interpreting arrangements, adapted to the format of the discussions and the layout of the venue.

Our client, Speak Up Africa, works with African leaders, institutions and communities to advance health and sustainable development.

Health sovereignty and financing in Côte d’Ivoire

The first event, held in the Taylor Room, focused on health sovereignty, health financing and universal health coverage, with a keynote presentation prepared for H.E. Pierre Dimba, Minister of Health, Public Hygiene and Universal Health Coverage of Côte d’Ivoire.

The programme explored how countries can strengthen their health systems and develop more sustainable financing. Côte d’Ivoire’s experience provided the context for a broader discussion of access to healthcare and national ownership.

For Cultures Connection, this meant coordinating interpreting and audio equipment for a presentation and panel format. English–French simultaneous interpretation enabled participants to follow contributions in either language without adding consecutive interpretation pauses to the programme.

The Ouagadougou Partnership ministerial meeting

A second event took place in Meeting Room A: the Ouagadougou Partnership ministerial meeting, centred on political leadership in a changing health financing environment.

The materials included a presentation by Marie Ba, Director of the Ouagadougou Partnership Coordination Unit, introducing the Partnership and its strategic direction.

The meeting programme brought together ministerial perspectives from West Africa alongside regional institutions and development partners. Its focus was the sustainability of family planning financing and the role of domestic resources.

The roundtable format called for a different technical arrangement from the first event. Microphones distributed around the table supported contributions from different seats, while individual receivers and headsets gave participants access to the interpretation.

Two rooms with different requirements

Supporting two distinct events on the same day required coordination between the organizers, interpreters, venue and technical providers.

The arrangements covered interpreting teams, listening equipment, microphones and on-site technical assistance. Room access and installation schedules also had to fit around the two programmes.

Preparation extended to the subject matter. Presentations and reference documents helped the interpreters become familiar with the terminology of health financing, universal health coverage and regional cooperation.

This combination of linguistic preparation and practical coordination is central to conference interpreting. Interpreters need a clear audio feed and relevant background information; participants need a straightforward way to listen and contribute.

Interpreting support for international meetings

This assignment illustrates the different needs that can arise within a single day of international events. A keynote and panel session requires one approach; an interactive ministerial roundtable requires another.

Cultures Connection helps organizations plan these arrangements together, from selecting interpreters to coordinating the equipment and technical support appropriate to each room.
